Agilent 86142A optical spectrum analyzer repair

The Agilent 86142A focuses on the C and L bands - 1200 to 1650 nm - with high wavelength accuracy and 55 dB dynamic range. It was deployed in DWDM system validation, amplifier gain characterization, and laser linewidth measurement applications where the visible-wavelength coverage of the 86140-series wasn’t needed. Keysight no longer supports this model.

The 86142A’s narrower wavelength range means the optical path sees more concentrated use in the 1200–1650 nm window, which accelerates detector degradation and optical path contamination relative to broadband instruments. Sensitivity loss and increased noise floor are the most common failures, usually traced to optical path contamination or aging detector assemblies. Grating assembly issues, firmware boot problems, and connector wear round out the failure list.

Bench testing covers DFB references at 1310, 1550, and 1625 nm, sensitivity floor measurement, dynamic range verification, and wavelength accuracy check. Component-level board repair, optical cleaning, grating alignment, and NIST-traceable calibration complete the service. Cal cert with before-and-after data included.

Flat-rate estimate: $100. Turnaround 1–3 days. International shipping available.
