The HP 70951B is the B-revision of the 70951, with improved sensitivity (−95 dBm in band), better amplitude accuracy, and selectable input connector configuration for either monochromator or photodetector input. It forms the HP 71451B system in the HP 70004A mainframe. HP support for this module is discontinued. The selectable input configuration is a differentiator that also adds failure risk: the input switching circuitry and connector interface both wear with use. Sensitivity loss from optical contamination is the most common failure on the 70951B given its −95 dBm specification. At that sensitivity level, even minor internal contamination measurably degrades measurements. Grating assembly and sweep mechanism wear, interface contact oxidation from mainframe insertion cycles, and analog conditioning board failures round out the typical failure list. We test each 70951B in a mainframe, checking sensitivity in both input modes, amplitude accuracy, sweep time, and wavelength accuracy. Component-level board repair, optical cleaning and alignment, and NIST-traceable calibration with cal cert complete the service.
